Today, in Du’s absence and the complete and utter collapse of public and otherwise transport in our fair city of Zagreb, Urkowsky and I decided to have a Skype rehearsal together.  I was quite a bit excited as I’d come up with a new motif after being inspired by some music that Urkowsky had sent me last week.  So I sat at my computer at 21h on the dot as we had agreed, waiting for Urkowsky, lyrics and ukulele in hand.  Urkowsky wasn’t there so I decided to do a bit of YouTubing while I waited for him.

At 21h15, Urkowsky turns up, guitar in hand.  We chatted a bit and realised that the connection wasn’t that great and wondered how this was going to turn out.  But we’re not ones to give up easily so Ur started playing and I started singing.  But after a while we realised it was just a disaster.  I could hardly hear a thing as could Ur, everything was breaking up.  So we decided to give up (after about 5 attempts of hanging up and calling back and then trying from another computer) and research what other alternatives we could use in the future.

In this world of Facebook, Skype, online chatting and the like, there is still nothing that beats real human contact, be it over a beer at the local pub or jamming with your mates in the same room or concert stage

And today’s failed Skype rehearsal made me realise a number of things:

*  in the spirit of Murphy’s law, with technology if anything can go wrong, it will

*  don’t have high expectations

*  in this world of Facebook, Skype, online chatting and the like, there is still nothing that beats real human contact, be it over a beer at the local pub or jamming with your mates in the same room or concert stage

*  I really have to get myself a better internet connection, I mean, seriously…
